“Trying to inspire a grassroots solution for distressed orphanages in Haiti”
Our sister organization in Haiti is the UHOA (Union of Haitian Orphanages for Action) Through the UHOA, we have identified several distressed orphanages within the 54 member organization co-founded by HORP. We start by doing site evaluations and needs assessments on UHOA members. We listen to the directors tell us about their needs before we come up with a long term renovation plan. After the orphanage directors reach certain goals within the UHOA (that help ensure the long term care of the children) they become eligible for HORP upgrades and improvements as incentives for active involvement with the UHOA. We hire local labor and purchase materials from local hardware suppliers to support the local community. HORP Improvements include: composting toilets, raised bed gardens, water purification systems, internet service, storage solutions, mosquito netting, play structures, sanitation, fresh paint, roof repairs and even basic shelters when needed. Our goal is to help directors of the UHOA improve the quality of life by giving them the tools they need to be successful. Money raised for upgrades and improvements to UHOA programs comes from fundraising, grants and private contributions.
**Money donated exclusively for operating expenses is a separate program within HORP that is designed to allocate earmarked contributions to a specific orphanage selected by the donor on a case by case basis.
